It’s official. Jim Harbaugh, who coached Michigan to the 2023 national championship and did what he set out to do in Ann Arbor, wants a Super Bowl championship before his coaching career ends. Harbaugh, who lost Super Bowl XLVII with the San Francisco 49ers 11 years ago, wants back in the NFL. He left Michigan to coach the Los Angeles Chargers.
“On the heels of winning a national championship, Harbaugh decided to return to the NFL, having met with the Los Angeles Chargers twice. According to NFL insiders Ian Rapoport, Tom Pelissero and Mike Garafalo, Harbaugh will be hired by the Chargers as their next head coach. (Editor’s note: the Chargers have since announced Harbaugh as the new coach.)”
Harbaugh struggled in his first few seasons at Michigan. He was on the other side of the rivalry with Ohio State. For several years, it was Harbaugh and Michigan who couldn’t figure out the Buckeyes. Beginning in 2021, however, Harbaugh cracked the code and began to beat Ryan Day and Ohio State. Michigan’s three-game winning streak against the Buckeyes paved the way for three straight Big Ten championships and three College Football Playoff berths, the last of which led to Michigan’s first national title since 1997.
USC will face Michigan this September in Ann Arbor. Harbaugh will not be on the sidelines for the Wolverines.
