Two recent crystal ball predictions from 247Sports let former Michigan State Spartans quarterback Payton Thorne make his way south. Last season for the Spartans, Thorne played in 12 games with 2,679 yards passing and 19 touchdowns.
During his East Lansing career, Thorne has completed 61.0% of his 861 attempts for 6,493 yards and 49 touchdowns. He averaged 7.5 meters per attempt.
After poking around a few other names in the transfer portal as a quarterback, Hugh Freeze might have his next quarterback as the summer months approach.
The team started TJ Finley and Robby Ashford at quarterback a season ago. Backup Holden Geriner threw just three passes in his only appearance of the season. Finley and Ashford threw for a combined 1,944 yards with 8 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Ashford was the starter for most of the season and he finished as the second leading rusher ahead of expected starter Jarquez Hunter.
Adding Thorne will give the team an experienced starter at the quarterback position as Freeze prepares for his first season in the SEC. While Ashford provided some monster plays with his legs in 2022, he has a responsibility as a passer until he develops in the pocket.
Payton Thorne vs. Tyler Buchner, as we all thought.
